If human beings are "designed" to eat meat?

are we not "designed" to hunt down, kill, and consume our prey raw and digest it like lions and other predators do? If a human had to rely solely on their own resources to capture and consume an animal, I dont see how that could be accomplished. Predatory animals have claws and incisor teeth making them capable of crushing bones, tearing flesh, etc. The simple fact of the matter is most humans could not eat meat if they couldnt buy it easily., and we all know meat has to be cooked for human consumption. We are the only animals on earth that alter food from its natural state by cooking and seasoning it. All other creatures consume it as is. To me, it makes more sense that we were "designed" with an imposable thumb, for easily planting and picking fruits and vegetables? I would like input from both sides on this-I am trying to keep an open mind

If human beings are "designed" to eat meat?
Just eat or die
Reply:Tis true, but we also have canine teeth.
Reply:I think it is because we accept meat as a source of quick protein and cooked meat is easier to digest..
Reply:I am not a vegetarian but it does seem we are not designed to eat meat. We have the wrong kind of teeth for it and we can't digest meat properly. Fruit is our most natural food, we digest it almost instantly. I know that switching my diet to mostly raw fruits %26amp; veggies (plus working out) has taken me from a size 14 to a size 5.
Reply:Yes, we have opposable thumbs.

We also have large frontal lobes that allow us to use fire and design and make tools.

If you want to be a vegetarian, go ahead, but I can't agree with your chain of reasoning.
Reply:Human were designed more for a vegetarian diet.
Reply:I agree. Human beings are designed to be vegetarians. Look at our teeth which are different from the predators' like lions and tigers. !!!
Reply:another reason why I don't eat meat
Reply:Cooking...so easy a cave man could do it..lol
Reply:the only way to get protein from beans or lentils is to cook them.we also cook vegetables and nuts to eat so the only thing left is fruit we do not cook fruit but there isn't enough fruit to feed the planet especially in the winter time so we need to eat what we can get all year round and sometimes this means cooking meat, fish, and vegetables.you couldn't really eat raw beans or rice they are too hard and need to be cooked and cooking meat is more of a health issue.
Reply:Well, in the caveman era we supposedly used spears and handmade weapons to kill animals and then roast them on our own fires.

It looks to me as if we are getting lazier as time goes on. According to the food chain, we're supposed to eat animals, but also plants. Many people these days are more carnivorous than omnivorous though, and the meat industry is booming. We now have to clear forests to make cow pastures. This explains why many of us are taking action by not eating meat, and this balances out the food chain.

I think eating meat in moderation is the way to go. And also, since people aim to be humane, animals should be killed as painlessly as possible. Unfortunatelythis isn't always the case. So I don't eat meat. =) Plus I would just feel bad eating an adorable pig or whatnot.
Reply:Early man WAS designed for hunting, gathering, AND could consume raw prey. But we can also reason and are designed to try to find new ways to make our lives easier. So, when the first man (or woman) who rubbed two sticks together and got a little spark thought "Hey I wonder how food would taste over this." That was the end of our days of eating raw meat and therefore built up an intolerance for it. And of course time went on and now in modern times somone else has the job of slaughtering our meat for us and we can just go to the supermarket and buy as much of it as we need. And so ended the days of hunting for survival. You are correct we have imposable thumbs designed for reaching grabbing fruits and veggies, but remember we are also OMNIvores. And as far as I know we always have been. So we had to be equipped with the resources to obtain both meat AND foilage. However, even though we may go to the store to get our produce as well, we STILL use our imposable thumbs on a daily basis for work, play or whatever. We STILL are using them to reach and grab something. So you see its not really a matter entirely of how we are designed, its a matter of how we have evolved since our early ancestors. Once we made life easier for ourselves there was no need to have the animalistic traits we once did. If you don't use it, you lose it. :-p
Reply:Well canine teeth has nothing to do with it because herbivores have canine teeth.

Your not supposed to cook nuts, fruits or veggies either because it kills the nutrients.

People may eat meat but from a scientific perspective it is not meant to go in to are bodies and that's why their is negative affects.

WE eat meat simply because it has become sooo normalized in society ...people think its the only way to get protein. ANother part of it is it is so hard to get food that's not meat in restaurants or the average grocery store. Business's' cater to meat eaters because they make money off it. People just love the taste as well even though its bad for you.

...I don't believe it is right and it leads to a number of diseases'....but it is almost impossible to eat a truly healthy diet and live in society today. It's to bad because if people focused on all the protein alternatives and growing nuts and stuff we could feed a lot more people.

Meat production is also terrible for the planet (pollution, destructive gas')

It's really a shame but no one cares about this planet and everyone do their part but its never going to change because people are just ignorant.
Reply:The answer is evolution. As we have evolved we rely less on our animal instincts and more on outsmarting our prey.

We have the remnants of claws--nails, and we do have incisor teeth--now they are only for eating meat, as they're no longer needed to kill an animal by biting and ripping.

"The simple fact of the matter is most humans could not eat meat if they couldnt buy it easily.," Completely untrue. Using our higher intelligence, we have developed many many many weapons, and if those weren't available, anyone with reasoning skills could easily make an animal trap.

Humans are the only animals on earth who cook meat because we are the only animal on earth to learn to control fire for our own use.

From a biological, physiological, metabolical and historical standpoint, humans are designed to eat BOTH meat and plants, and both are required to achieve a healthy balanced diet naturally. (As vegetarians can only achieve this because they can buy enough plants, beans, nuts and supplements easily, also thanks to human intelligence.)
