How do dog teeth work? Do they get two sets, like humans? At what age do they fall out?

My lab is 5 months and he seems to be losing some. I've also noticed some small blood spots on some of his chew toys.

How do dog teeth work? Do they get two sets, like humans? At what age do they fall out?
Like humans, dogs have two sets of teeth in their lives. The 28 baby teeth erupt through the gums between the third and sixth weeks of age. Puppies do not have to grind much food, so they do not have molars. Puppy teeth begin to shed and be replaced by permanent adult teeth at about four months of age. Although there is some variation in breeds, most adult dogs have 42 teeth, with the molars coming last, at about six or seven months.

The order of tooth replacement is incisors first, then canines (fangs), and finally premolars. The teething period can be frustrating; the puppy clamps his mouth on everything he can reach, from body parts to Johnny's $80 sneakers, in an attempt to relieve the discomfort. Teething can be accompanied by drooling, irritability, and fluctuations in appetite.

Reply:Thats ok...his teeth are falling out. Puppies also get 2 sets of teeths.
Reply:yea they get two sets like us, they'll usualy lose the first set within their first or second year. dont worry about the blood spots, when they lose their teeth it bleeds a little, it'll heal up and a new tooth will come in.
Reply:this is completely normal. Most puppies will lose their teeth anywhere from 5-7months....sometimes older or younger depending on how fast your dog is growing. if he seems to be in teething pain, get some special teething puppy toys to help or go to your vet! :)
Reply:Dog teeth are much like human teeth. Don't get too concerned about the blood. It will probably be about another month before everything is grown to place properly. If you find a white thing that looks like a tooth in the dogs poo, then don't get worried. You probably wont find any of the teeth because the dog usually swallows them. Just remember, this is usual for the puppies age, so don't get to freaked out.
Reply:Relax, kick back and just collect those puppy teeth and put in a jar! LOL That's what I've done for every pup I've had. I have at least one tooth from each pup over the years.

Your pup is loosing his baby teeth on time.. new ones will come in soon... if you look in his mouth you may see the new larger ones popping thru the gum line.

Good time to use your finger and gently massage the gums.... perhaps give him some ice to chew on to help with the pain.

:) Good luck.. and love your pup, he's your new best friend.
Reply:Yup. Puppies loose their teeth just like we do when we're kids. No worries. :P

My mom saved my dogs teeth and it was funny to look at them compared to his big 13 year old teeth. Heh.
Reply:Dog teeth have two sets, like us. You know when you lost your teeht? Well it's like that. I don't know what age but you can ask your vet.
