Dogs and human toothpaste?

Okay, I tried brushing my dog's teeth this morning with dog toothpaste. She kept biting me. She didn't like the toothbrush I suppose. That toothpaste didn't help her breath at all, anyway. Made it smell like beef. I put a verrrrrry small amount of human toothpaste on my finger and let her lick it off. It made her breath so much better. Her teeth are not what I'm concerned about right now. Just wanna fix her breath. She threw up about 10 mins ago, prolly 3 hrs after I let her lick the toothpaste. She throws up A LOT, though, so there's a good chance it wasn't cuz of the toothpaste. Would it be okay to let her lick that small amount once a day, or even twice a day?

Dogs and human toothpaste?
Jeez karen what did i tell you? thats a BAD idea. plus if sandy throws up all the time doesnt that mean something is WRONG? dont give me a thumbs down people this is my best friend haha!

NO HUMAN TOOTHPASTE FOR DOGS! but nooo you just had to go and do it and ask OTHER people. jeez.

use the dog toothpaste Zakky uses.. i just brushed his teeth today. his breath smells yummy!

ALSO you SHOULD be concerned MORE about her teeth than her breath. her teeth are NASTY!
Reply:Nope human toothpaste is not even really safe for humans to swallow so it is for sure not safe for a dog to be licking twice a day. It may seem like a small amount but over time it adds up.
Reply:Dogs should never be allowed to have human toothpaste - if you don't like her breath, feed her those dog breath mints made from parsley.

To answer the second part of your post - there are dog mints called Yip Yaps that you can usually get at PetCo or PetSmart.

Good luck!
Reply:No, but they make special toothpaste for dogs.
Reply:I don't think so, we are not even suppose to swallow the stuff. They make doggie breath mints, try those.
Reply:No. It is not good for humans to eat toothpaste, let alone dogs. Too much floride can cause poisoning. Why don't you get your dog some minty biscuits or something.
Reply:No. It's not for consumption. You will slowly poison her.

And why is she throwing up a lot - do you give her milk? Don't - dogs are lactose intolerant. Do you give her human food? Don't do that either.

I don't mean to be tough on you - but I had dogs as a kid and my parents made lots of mistakes - giving them milk and table scraps, and they ended up with lots of medical problems.
Reply:well ibrush my dogs teeth with human toothpaste and i know they swallow at least a little bit of it so your probably fine but i only do it once a day i dont know if it would harm them to do it more but i have a dog who throws up alot too and its really annoying we cant feed him any treats but we can with the other dog and i feel bad when i give the other one a treat then i have to go find him a treat.
Reply:It was a bad idea to give her human toothpaste. Humans are not even suppose to swallow toothpaste.....ever read the lable? Thats obviously why we spit it out....not swallow it. So Don't do it again! Use the dog toothpaste it isn't necessarily for bad breath its for cleaning teeth. Dogs have bad breath, thats all there is to it. So deal with it or put a clothespin on your nose.
Reply:You can kill your dog trying human items with them. Educate yourself before making silly moves like the one you did this morning.
Reply:Nope! If you can read the tube, it says not to swallow.. It's not recommended for kids under a certain age.. It's poison, it'll make her throw up..
Reply:NO thats why its for humans and not dogs. try dog breath mints they do have them check at a pet store like petco or even a small pet store. Don't give her people food that will give her bad breath. and they have toys and bones to help with breath and teeth. NO HUMAN TOOTH PASTE..
Reply:if she throws up alot take her to the vet!
Reply:u dont need to brush your dog with human toothpaste because their are stores that sell canine toothpace and it also shows u how to use the toothpaste and it comes with a toothBrush
Reply:human toothpaste is not good for dogs. I think flouride is actually toxic to them.

Use dog toothpaste, start by letting her lick it off your finger, do that every day, as she gets used to it put your finger in her mouth, they do make little finger things for brushing teeth. Dont worry about being perfect, just getting her comfortable with it. As she gets comfortable with that, you can start to introduce the toothbrush.

Bad breath may be caused by dental problems (gum disease, plack, infection, etc), poor quality food, or even digestive problems! I would hazard a guess that since she throws up often it may be her diet or digestive problems. Take her to the vet and find out what's going on.
Reply:you shouldn't swallow toothpaste so I'm guessing the dog shouldn't either. The local pet supply store should have a wide variety of breath freshening stuff. Pet Smart even has breath freshening tennis balls.
Reply:Probably not, theres a reason they make dog toothpaste. There stomachs cant handle what's in human stuff.
Reply:DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE ON YOUR DOG! There are treats at your local petstore called Denta-bone. My dog uses them all the time and LOVES them.
Reply:BE CAREFUL! There is a recall out on toothpaste - both human and pet - made in China. Again, the Chinese have put a toxic contaminant in their product.

So check all the toothpaste in your house and check before you buy.

And you need to call and confer with your vet before you tinker more with your dog's health. Your vet can give you the proper method to use and the right toothpaste to use, etc. Besides, your dog is probably overdue for his teethcleaning. Yes, he will need that in addition to tooth brushing. Otherwise you will end up with more serious problems, healthwise, and a much larger bill.
Reply:If she trow up i don't think so. u should stop. Try different ones or make your dog eat a lot of water fopr the bad smell.
