How often should a dog's teeth be brushed?

Should I use a specific kind of toothpaste or is human toothpaste okay? A specific brush or can I use an ordinary human tooth brush? Should I rinse out her mouth (It doesn%26#039;t seem right though)? How to get the dog used to it?

How often should a dog%26#039;s teeth be brushed?
you never use human toothpaste, it has way more flouride than they can handle. brush as often as you would, once a day, or once a week. they have special v shaped toothbrushes that work good for them. you dont need to rinse her mouth out, they will do that themselves. to get them used to it, start less often, and then they will get used to it. start by letting her just get used to the brush, put the paste on the brush and then let her lick it to see what it is, and then start brushing the teeth slowly.
Reply:About once a week. Go to the petstore and get a dog toothbrush (The finger brushes work great) and enzymatic toothpaste for dogs (Don%26#039;t use human toothpaste..).
Reply:You should use the toothpaste made for dogs, not human toothpaste. Human toothpaste shouldn%26#039;t be ingested (we can spit, dogs can%26#039;t). You should be able to use an ordinary soft people toothbrush. No need to rinse when using doggie toothpaste.

You need to be gentle and to get her used to it, start when she%26#039;s tired from a walk or playing. Have her lying on her side and brush just the front teeth the first time or two to try and get her used to it. Most dogs bite at the toothbrush, or keep opening their mouths, but that%26#039;s ok, be patient, let her, then go back to trying to brush.

Reply:It all depends on the condition of their teath. If their teeth are bad, then brush them 2x a week. If they%26#039;re not so bad 1x a week or 2x a month is fine. A human tooth brush is fine to use as long as it isn%26#039;t to hard or to big. I wouldn%26#039;t recomend using people toothpaste though. Go to the pet shop and buy some beef or chicken flavored paste. If they like the flavor then it isn%26#039;t as hard to do. You don%26#039;t need to rinse their mouth out at all after done.





If you don%26#039;t want to brush their teeth and they look pretty good give them raw hide bones to chew on. They work the tartar off of their teeth and they enjoy them.
Reply:Humm.... They do make the utinsils to brush a dogs teeth along with the proper tooth paste for dogs and mouth rinse if you take a visit to your local vets.





You must NOT use any kind of human products or formulas on dogs. They are not made for dogs, they are made for humans.





Its like you eating dog food, it wasn%26#039;t made for you so why would you eat it?








I do not brush my dogs teeth, though I use dental bones like greenies and flip chips. These kind of bone safely clean the dogs teeth while they chew without having to brush their teeth or anything!
Reply:Brushing every day is ideal. But atleast 2 times a week should be good





Do not do not do not use human toothpaste on dogs. it can make them very sick.





I use a a vanilla mint toothpaste made for dogs/ cats. There are poultry and beef flavored tooth pastes as well.





They do have soft bristle brushes made for pets...but a baby toothbrush works well.





The best thing I find however is to take a 4x4 gauze and moisten it..put on the tooth paste and rub it on the teeth....gets it extrememly clean without the dogs minding so much





It%26#039;s best to start young with them, but if your dog lets you mess with their mouth it%26#039;s okay to start any time.





You do not have to wash out their mouth when you are done.

Human toothpaste can make a dog sick, and human toothbrushes can be too big (depending on the dog). No, you won%26#039;t need to rinse her mouth out. For the best results, you should brush them every day, but that can be a little unrealistic. Repeatition is helpful for getting the dog used to having her teeth brushed. Some dogs don%26#039;t mind it, but others hate it and will not be very cooperative.
