I have White Shepherd and I know what you mean. I have never taken her anywhere that I haven't had at least 2 compliments on what a beautiful ( note the spelling) dog she is.

Do Not under any circumstances use human toothpaste on your dogs. Check the ingredients list, many contain the main ingredient of antifreeze. Human toothpaste is not meant to be swallowed. If you want to brush their teeth buy toothpaste designed for use with animals. Most come in tasty meat flavors.

Or better yet,do some research and start you little friends on a raw diet including raw meaty bones. In just a few short months their teeth will be stronger, healthier and shiny white and their breath will be kissing sweet.

No struggle to stick you fingers in their mouth, no expensive trips to the vet to have their teeth cleaned. no plaque to promote tooth decay and compromise the immune system.

Take it from someone who's been doing this a long time, it's the right thing to do for your dogs and for you.

Get some books, read some articles and you'll see I am right.
Reply:dont use human toothpaste!

go to petco and ask them!

also, your dogs cannot enter a

dog show unless they're all PUREBREDS!
Reply:Rawhides take care of a lot of the coloration of the teeth. Use a pair of cutters with a guard. (I find a pair of toe nail clippers work good on my shepherd). I would strongly suggest going to the vet the first time and have him/her show you the proper way to trim. Never use human toothpaste on dogs. You can't rinse out a dog's mouth like you can make a 4 year old. There's a reason even humans are suppose to swallow the toothpaste... (good rule of thumb: If you can't swallow it don't use it on your dog)
Reply:DO NOT use human toothpaste! You can buy dog toothpaste at PetSmart. But be gentle when brushing their teeth. Their gums are sensitive. Also, you can buy toenail trimmers at PetSmart, but I HIGHLY recommend taking them to groomers for that because you can easily cut the nails too short and hurt them badly.

Just take them to a vet to get checked out and for advice on their health and care.
Reply:It is great that you are looking to take steps necessary to ensure proper care of your pets! Here are some tips:

Teeth - most pet stores carry special toothpaste for your pets' teeth, do NOT use human toothpaste. You can use a finger brush or child's toothbrush, but the BEST to use, especially if your dogs will tolerate it, is a mechanical rotary brush as a dog's mouth has a unique shape to it and using a normal toothbrush usually results in lack of cleaning the back teeth (esp. molars). This should be enough to prevent periodontal disease, although some dogs are more prone to plaque and tartar accumulation and will need occassional cleaning at your veterinarian's office.

Nails: nails are not so hard to trim, and you can get pretty good nail trimmers at a pet store. However, there are fairly large blood vessels that run down the center of each nail, and if you cut the nail too fair you may "quick" the dog (causing the nail to bleed). This bleeding can be stopped by using some styptic powder or even baking soda but I reccommend that before trimming the nails for the first time you visit your vet's or a groomer's and they can show you how to properly do this.

NOTE! It is VERY important in very young dogs that you take care not to quick their nails as this will result in a dog that will forever dred having their nails trimmed! Also, some dogs have ticklish feet or just do not like having their nails trimmed - it does not mean they are being "bad" and you may need to seek help to trim their nails (e.g. from a groomer)
Reply:You need to groom them, this includes bathing and trimming nails and general washing of everything. that will fix the feet. You can feed raw (it MUST be raw to be safe) chicken wings, or leg quarters, or a big tom turkey neck 2 or 3 times a week in addition to your dry food to keep teeth sparkling clean. If you wanted to make the switch to raw completly, youd never have a dirty tooth problem again. heres some links for you,
