Don't you find it odd that only dogs and humans have canine teeth?

Actually, cats, monkeys, great apes, bears, wolverines, etc., etc., etc. also have canine teeth. Even though canine can refer to dogs, that isn't the case with canine teeth. These are web definitions of canine from Princeton.

1. of or relating to a pointed conical tooth

2. one of the four pointed conical teeth (two in each jaw) located between the incisors and the premolars

no. in other animals they are fangs or not needed because the foods they eat
Reply:Maybe that's where the term SOB came from. :-)

Reply:Yeah!

I never noticed, but since you asked, it is interisting!
Reply:actually, other animals DO have canine teeth. Monkeys, cats... pretty much any predator.
Reply:"Truthfully there is not much to be said about canine teeth. The adaptations required to develop a couple of long, sharp, recurved teeth towards the front of the jaw are simple enough. They have occurred countless times from fish to felines."

and it's not just those animals either: "Rodents don't have canines at all. The tusks of the wart hog, barbirussa, and the extinct sabre tooth cat are canines of dramatically increased size. The most typical offensive specialization in mammalian teeth is represented by the canines."

"Canines are positioned behind the incisors. One canine is present on each side of the upper and lower jaws. These teeth are long and conical and are used by carnivorous mammals to stab prey, or may be used in self defense. The dog family earned its common name because of its well developed canine teeth. Many omnivorous and herbivorous mammals have small canines or have lost them through evolutionary tooth reduction. Humans, as an omnivorous species, have canines that barely protrude above the level of the incisors."

Why only humans have to wash their anus and clean teeth?

No animal ever washes anus or cleans teeth even they remain healthy and humans even do both the acts and suffer various ailments. why so?

Why only humans have to wash their anus and clean teeth?
Yes they do. Don't you ever see them licking themselves? Animals do it all the time That is what they are doing. As far as cleaning thier teeth, their food usually does that for them.
Reply:Some animals don't remain healthy. And it's really just a personal choice., If you don't want to take showers from now on, no one's stopping you.
Reply:No, animals lick themselves, groom each other, bathe in puddles and ponds. As for their teeth, certain things that they eat or chew on cleanse their teeth.

As for illness, there are many causes - it need not necessarily come from poor hygiene.

have u seen what we eat... animals eat straight from the source (dead animal or fresh veges)... we add chemicals, perservatives, flavor, sugar, coloring, and everything in it.... before we sell it... what we buy at the store is not as fresh as u think... it looks fresh yes, but there are a lot of chemicals on it, even fruits and veges...

we put chemicals on it to make it grow bigger and "look" healthy, because the more it weights, the more we money we make, so thats why we have to take care of ourselves more then any animal...

How come a lot of humans have messed up teeth and animals hardly ever do?

People are born with crooked snaggle teeth and anmals have good teeth wtf?

How come a lot of humans have messed up teeth and animals hardly ever do?
That's not true.
Reply:Some ppl say it's b/c we bottle feed our babies--- studies have shown that breastfed babies are more-likely to have straighter teeth.

Some animals to do have "messed up" teeth--- dogs commonly do, so many so that some ppl get braces for their dogs teeth. I think it could be that we just notice it more among our own species.
Reply:animals use their teeth more often for rougher things, so their teeth get worn down, broken, fall out, and so theres more space in the jaw for the teeth to fit in so they aren't crooked
Reply:Other mammals besides humans have messed up teeth too. Check out chimps, bull dogs, and gophers. I would hardly consider their teeth to be perfect.
Reply:Because we are very effective adaptors (we use tools, for example!) individual humans with things that would make other animals incapable of surviving to breed (teeth that don't work, terrible eyesight, stuff like that) that are caused by mutations from normal in our genetic make up SURVIVE in our populations, and are inherited by the next generation.

Early in the 20th century, many scientists were concerned that this fact was dooming us all to bad eyesight and bad teeth, but their research, which was probably well-intentioned at the time, was the foundation of modern Eugenics, which most people agree is a scary concept.
Reply:Because humans are messed up and animals are not. I'm just being silly. Really though, in the wild, animals that are not equipped to live, die. Humans fix and correct their problems or can in regards to health issues.
Reply:You ought to see my dog if you think that's true. She's a Yorke chihuahua mix and her teeth stick out so bad she can't even shut her mouth. Her grill's a wreck.

What did pre-historic humans clean their teeth with?

they didn't clean their teeth.

What did pre-historic humans clean their teeth with?
I don't think that they did.
Reply:The first teeth-cleaning implements were probably twigs of some sweet-flavored plant, frayed at the ends by pounding or chewing.

But most folks didn't bother. With a life expectancy in the mid-30s, there's a lot of redundancy built into the old dentition; you can lose a whole lot of teeth and still be able to handle cooked foods and most vegetables. And if you couldn't? Well, you died and solved the problem.
Reply:It's unlikely that they did. However, it's unlikely that they had such high sugar diets back then.
Reply:Their finger nails.
Reply:They didn't. Thus the lifespan was very short. When I see that Mel Gibson movie about the middle ages it irritates me that everybody has such fine white teeth. No. Even at that stage, folks only lived to about 40. If your teeth fall out you can't eat, you see.

Why do humans have 32 teeth and not 30 or 34?

Well, I think we can assume a need for an underlying symmetry, with the same number of teeth on top as on bottom. This means the total number of teeth would have to be a multiple of 4 which excludes both 30 and 34.

28 or 36 could be symmetrical possibilities, but 30 or 34 is simply out of the question. LOL

Why do humans have 32 teeth and not 30 or 34?
Some don%26#039;t have 32 teeth. Some have a couple Some have three and a half. Some have just one, and it points straight out.

But maybe I just notice these things because I live in the Appalachian Mountains...
Reply:Because 32 is just the right number to fit in your mouth.
Reply:Most people have a total of 32 permanent teeth however genetics can cause extra teeth to develop and erupt. The opposite can happen and a person may genetically be missing a one or more teeth.
Reply:r u looking for a philosophical answer or a medical one?

cuz either cuz god sed so, or cuz humans evolved tha way
Reply:because they have all of there wisdom teeth.

Why do humans get wisdom teeth??

I mean its not like it lasts for long, since its hard to clean n its all the way at the very back which is hard to manage, so y do we need it when most ppl go to the dentist to get it pulled out???

Why do humans get wisdom teeth??
Wisdom teeth used to serve a useful purpose, but are now considered vestigial organs. A vestige is a degenerative or imperfectly formed organ or structure having little or no utility, but in the earlier stage of development of a species performed a useful function. The reasons that wisdom teeth are now %26quot;outdated%26quot; are many. Until quite recently, our diet included mostly very coarse food, as well as impurities such as dirt and sand. This coarseness would abrade teeth so significantly that they would take up less space in the jaw. Permanent teeth were also frequently lost at an early age, which would create more space in the jaw. Because the diet was so coarse and hard to chew, the jaw itself would develop into a larger bone because of this constant workout. All of these factors would create more space for the wisdom teeth when they came in.

The heavily processed diet of today does not produce the tooth abrasion or jaw development that we used to see. Modern dentistry has pretty much eliminated significant loss of permanent teeth at an early age. This leaves us with too many teeth and not enough jaw. The wisdom teeth still develop as they always have, but they have no where to go.
Reply:Gives something for the dentist to do now that more and more people are having less cavities. Dentists need money to eat too.
Reply:To help with the digesting process..it helps our food disolve, and become easier to swallow...and if we didn%26#039;t have wisdom teeth--or even back teeth--think about it..literally, we could choke if we weren%26#039;t EXTRA careful. I Dont see how people without teeth can eat---they just have to be careful, without choking. :-D
Reply:It%26#039;s nothing to do with how clever you are that%26#039;s for sure.

They are called wisdom teeth because you have them later on in life.
